First Choice Neurology is hosting a new series of Facebook Live events this month – COVID-19: Roadmap to Reopening.
Jeffrey Gelblum, MD kicked off the series yesterday presenting “Re-engaging Older Loved Ones”. He talked about the coronavirus pandemic and endemic.
Dr. Gelblum talks about the components of infectivity (Ro):
1. Duration – how long are you sick and can infect other people
2. Opportunity – social distancing limits respiratory transmission
3. Transmit – masks limit nasal and oral secretions
4. Susceptibility – older and immunosuppressed adults have a higher susceptibility
COVID-19 is now one of the top ten causes of death with older adults. So, how do we start to re-engage with our older family members? By wearing a mask, practicing social distancing, and vigorous hand washing diminishes the rate of infection with older loved ones you will be visiting.
It has been shown that outdoor encounters are safer than indoor encounters. If you have a family member in a nursing home, arrange to meet your loved one outdoors at the facility. Socialization is extremely important for seniors.
